I’M WOKEN OUT OF MY sleep by frantic banging. My back is moulded against Ethan’s warm body and his arm is wrapped tightly around me. We both take a moment to rub the sleep from our eyes, then, as the banging gets louder, Ethan sits bolt upright in the bed.

“What the fuck?” he exclaims.

My pulse begins to race. Have we been discovered?

Max’s voice booms into our room. “Ethan, if you don’t answer this bloody door I’m going to steal your passport and leave you here!”

Oh shit.

“We need to get rid of him.” I pull the white cotton sheet around my body. “Fast.”

“Are you even in there?” Max shouts from behind the closed door.

Did we lock the door last night? Oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck . . . no, we didn’t. The doors don’t lock. We don’t even have any bloody keys.

“I’ll go.” Ethan gets out of bed, his eyes searching the floor. “Where the hell are my pants?”

More banging. “Breakfast was served half an hour ago and Kenneth is pissed off with you,” yells Max. Ethan picks up a towel and wraps it around his middle. “I don’t even know why I care if our new boss thinks you’re a liability – you are a bloody liability!”

“Calm down, Max. I’ll be five minutes.”

“Why have you been ignoring me?”

“I was asleep. Now go away.”

“Go away? I’ve had to suffer Kenneth Ives wittering on about all the celebrities and millionaires he plays bloody golf with all morning because of you.” The door handle creaks, and my stomach leaps into my throat. I pull the sheet over my body, roll over and pull a pillow over my head in the nick of time. Max barges through the door and I pretend to be asleep.

“Max, what the hell? Get out of my fucking room!”

Deadly silence. My heart is beating so hard in my chest that I think it might explode. The pillow I’m holding over my head might be the last thing I ever see.

“I bloody knew it. You never fail, do you?”

“Max, I can explain—”

“Explain what? This is the last time you do this to me, Ethan Fraser. It took me years to forgive you for shagging Yasmin Jones. Remember how much I was into her at UCL? You knew I was into her and you still screwed her. You can’t help yourself, can you?”

Oh my god, is he saying what I think he’s saying? I’ve never thought of Max in that way and I’m sure he hasn’t . . . no, he can’t. I must have misheard. I hope I’ve misheard. I bury my face so deep in the pillow I can barely breathe.

“Erm . . . Max . . . I didn’t . . . what are you talking about?”

“You know fine well what I’m talking about. I told you yesterday that I liked Athina.”

Oh my god! He thinks I’m Athina. Of course! Our hair is the same length and colour and that’s all he can see. I stuff a chunk of pillow in my mouth to stop myself laughing.
